From New York Times bestselling, award-winning creator John Hendrix comes The Mythmakers, a graphic novel biography exploring the extraordinary friendship between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien—and how that bond helped shape two of the most beloved literary works of the 20th century.

Told through a mix of prose, comic panels, and lively narration, The Mythmakers begins in the near-idyllic childhoods of both men before turning to their harrowing experiences in World War I, their first meeting at Oxford in 1929, and the turbulent events of World War II that followed. Along the way, Hendrix brings to life the joys and tensions of their creative collaboration, revealing how their friendship gave them the courage to explore myth, faith, and imagination in their work—at a time when fantasy was seen as unfit for adult readers.

The story also delves into the Inklings, the famed literary group that served as a wellspring of support, critique, and camaraderie, and follows the ebb and flow of Lewis and Tolkien’s relationship through the years. Their different approaches to writing—Tolkien’s painstaking world-building versus Lewis’s intuitive, image-driven storytelling—highlight their creative differences, even as they remained united by shared themes and a deep respect for myth and meaning.

As with The Faithful Spy, Hendrix interweaves narrative with visual storytelling, this time using a wise wizard and a comical lion as guides, whose conversations make big ideas accessible and entertaining. Throughout, readers encounter gateways into the back matter, where concepts like the evolution of myth and the theology of creation are explored in greater depth, allowing the main story to flow for casual readers while offering additional insight for those eager to dig deeper.

The Mythmakers captures how two tweedy Oxford academics reshaped modern literature, re-enchanted a postwar world, and proved that fantasy could be not just serious literature, but a powerful vehicle for truth, wonder, and enduring friendship.
